The Championship Hangover:
The NBA Champion Dallas Mavericks started the season 1-4 heading into January. Now they are 8-5, winning their last 5 in the middle of January. It is well documented that many teams suffer from a tyrannical championship "hangover" in the months preceding receiving their rings. NBA Finals MVP Dirk Nowitzki didn't even look or touch a basketball for months this summer. The Mavericks are set to receive their rings formally on January 25th when the Minnesota Timberwolves travel to Dallas for a game. Picking up their rings, meeting the president, and getting Jason Kidd back from injury were surely all on Coach Carlisle's to-do list this month.

While correlation certainly does not make causation, since the Mavericks knew they were going to meet Obama at the White House and a date was set for mid-January for the Mavericks to receive their rings, the Dirk-led team has gone 5-1 and have blistered most of their opponents by double digits. Tonight, January 14th they also got Jason Kidd, their floor general, back from an injury. That is important as the Mavs head out on a four-game road trip beginning Monday against the L.A. Lakers. Kidd may be old but he is irreplaceable. And not even Delonte West, a.k.a. the Lebron Aggravator, can replace him, even though the team did go 4-0 since Kidd went out. Coach Carlisle wants to play Kidd 25 minutes and monitor his progress. He may have to throw him into the fire sooner rather than later, though, as the Mavericks' road trip could prove costly to an old team with nagging injuries. Coach C said, "I've got to kind of read the situation…he needs to get back out there and get into it, but we don't want to go overboard." So far on the night, though, Kidd has played nearly 30 minutes, raking in 6 assists, 6 steals, a three, and a block. So far, so good. Establishing a rhythm is good, but the Mavericks should take care of their surefire Hall of Famer, as he will undoubtedly play a big part in helping Dirk and company repeat as champions.
