Mavericks Poised to Make Run at 2010 Free Agents
Are the Mavericks in good position to go after the biggest free agent class ever this summer with names like Chris Bosh, LeBron James and Dwyane Wade?
The blog Hoobvibe makes its case for the Mavericks being in a prime position because of one factor: money.
The blog writes: "Currently, (the Mavericks) have $70 million in committed salary for 2010-11; however, the team holds options on Jose Barea ($2 million) and Josh Howard ($11 million). The final $13 million of Erick Dampier's contract only becomes guaranteed if he hits unrealistic targets like making the All-Star team. So the Mavericks could shed $25 million off the books, creating room to tender a $15-17 million max' contract. This would also leave money to fill out the roster with free agents."
The blog also thinks owner Mark Cuban has been purposely quiet about it. Personally, I don't think Cuban can be quiet about anything. But wouldn't it be a shocker for the Mavs to steal a LeBron or Wade?

Mavericks History
Dallas Mavericks have hit the headlines plenty of times since season 1980-81. For every Rolando Blackman and Derek Harper there has been a Roy Tarpley or Leon Smith. There has been the success of Dirk Nowitzki, the failure of Uwe Blab while Detlef Schrempf's Dallas time was somewhere in between those two. The latest Mavericks' news, the acquisition of LaFrentz and Van Exel, was due in part to Denver GM Kiki Vandeweghe. But Vandeweghe also helped build the original Mavs team, two decades ago. Mavericks Team Report (Yahoo! Sports) Asked if the Mavericks' problems were a product of not playing hard or not being good right now, coach Rick Carlisle couldn't argue either point. How could he?
"Unfortunately, it's probably both," he said. "We're not going to be good until we play hard."
Dropping a home game to Minnesota, the worst team in the Western Conference, wasn't the only sign of trouble. The Mavs struggled with lowly Golden State last week in Dallas before holding on late to win. The same Warriors gave the Mavs all they could handle Monday night in Oakland.
This is not what Dirk Nowitzki and Co. expected this season. The team's defensive woes have been especially confounding. In back-to-back games recently, Andre Miller scored 52 and Monta Ellis had 46. "When we decide to play and we... Terry leads the Mavericks past Warriors, 127-117 (AP)
Jason Terry spent the post-game lying on his back, his feet propped up on a folding chair, with a bag of ice tucked in the waist band of his shorts. It was just his way of relaxing after a hard night at work. Terry scored a season-high 36 points, including the go-ahead 3-pointer, and the Dallas Mavericks rallied from a 14-point deficit to beat the Golden State Warriors 127-117 on Monday night.
Marbury returns to basketball, joins Brave Dragons (AP) Stephon Marbury has returned to basketball -- this time, playing in a parched, polluted city in China after making himself unwelcome in the NBA. The team is officially called Shanxi Fenjiu, named for a local grain alcohol, but is more commonly known as the Brave Dragons. Home court is a grimy 5,300-seat arena with dragon decals peeling off the worn hardwood. Timberwolves rally late to beat Mavericks 117-108 (AP)
Kurt Rambis had seen his young Minnesota Timberwolves unravel many times late in tight games. On Friday night, the suddenly surging Timberwolves were the ones who made the key plays in the fourth quarter. With Dirk Nowitzki not starting after he was late for a pregame shootaround, rookie Jonny Flynn scored 19 points and Minnesota snapped a 13-game losing streak against Dallas, beating the Mavericks... |
