Mavericks 2012-2013 Season Outlook:

Two years ago, the Dallas Mavericks were able to beat the Miami Heat in the NBA Finals. Dirk Nowitzki proved himself a winner after murmurs that he couldn't produce when it mattered. Mark Cuban proved he wasn't too eccentric an owner, validating the way he does business in Dallas. Their victory was over the Miami Heat, who were slowly becoming an enemy of fans across the NBA.

The 2011-2012 NBA season was more difficult for the Mavericks. They let a lot of their players leave in order to clear cap space. They were planning to make a push for Deron Williams, who would become a free agent following the season. 2011 was going to be a down year, but in the sense that it would all go toward a better team in the future.

Once the offseason came around, the extra influence the Nets had over the Mavericks, the ability to offer Williams one extra-year and a little higher salary, ultimately pushed Williams to Brooklyn, leaving Dallas with few options and fewer weapons. Many of their starters and key players have left for greener pastures.

Jason Kidd is now playing for the Knicks, where A'mare Stoudemire's post play should enable Kidd's knees to produce an extra year or two of effective play through dependence on the lob pass.

Jason Terry is now in Boston, sporting green and white, where he will look to replace Ray Allen and mentor the young, but more talented, guard Avery Bradley, who is expected to make a big leap this season.

Now, the Mavericks sit with just Dirk Nowitzki and Shawn Marion remaining from their championship run. An aging team in a league where youth is prevalent, the Mavericks will have a tough time ahead of them this season. Still, with an owner like Mark Cuban who will push the team to compete in the future, this season won't be lost.

In the post, the Mavs have a slightly upgraded look, with former Clipper Chris Kaman as the new go-to guy in the middle. Kaman should provide a good scoring presence down low that can be lost in Dallas given Nowitzki's effectiveness in playing the perimeter from the four spot.

Elton Brand was also brought in, and will provide backup services to Nowitzki at the 4 and Kaman at the 5, giving the Mavericks a new-look front court.

Dirk, Dallas's only mainstay of the Cuban era, will continue to be the face of the franchise, and the main offensive weapon. Dirk is the biggest weapon Dallas has, despite aging, and his unique brand of perimeter play as a seven footer provides Dirk more life than most 34-year old PF's.

At the SF position, Dallas sports a two-man attack that would have been deadly-effective five years ago. Shawn Marion and Vince Carter are both past their primes, but are serviceable options in Dallas for the Mavs.

Dallas's backcourt will also bring a new look down South. After missing out on Deron Williams, Dallas made a deal with Indiana that brought in Darren Collison to play PG for the team. OJ Mayo, signed as a free agent, will likely start for Dallas at SG. This backcourt, while noticeably missing the would-be star of Deron Williams, has improved in both ability and age. Mayo and Collison both are able to push the ball up and down the court, a style that hasn't been embraced since Jason Kidd assumed the PG role years ago.

While Dallas has gotten better, they have been outpaced by the still-superior Thunder and the much improved Lakers. The addition of Dwight Howard and Steve Nash in LA makes the Mavericks an at best third-best team in the West. The coming season will probably, in the end, be like the last one-- a good season, but ultimately without a title for another season.
